Having a proven business development plan is essential if you are going to be able to deliver continuous success. Regardless of whether you’re a business development manager/ specialist/ executive, having a plan is key to delivering success.

I have worked in a business development role and been fortunate enough to have had a fair level of success. For me, I believe that the following seven steps are fundamental to having a winning business development plan. Each step plays a crucial role in achieving a successful outcome to deliver on the goals placed in front of you.

My goal was to write the plan out as I would execute it, so it’s logical to follow as a process.

So, first things first. What do you know about the business you work for?

The first step on the path to a winning business development plan is to truly understand the business you work for. It’s vital that you have an in-depth knowledge of the value proposition and the capabilities they offer.
